I’m not clever enough for poetry, Being a stereotypical guy: A spade’s a spade in my isometry, Not a worm’s guillotine from the sky. Why should poems be intellectual? So those aspiring to the bourgeoisie Can be celebrated as cerebral Without having to earn a PhD? But why should I care? Ah, to hell with it! I’ll stick with (I’m not embarrassed to say) Banjo Paterson, T. S. Eliot John Cooper Clark, Pam Ayres, and Sammy J. I’ll draw comfort and my chagrin allay Knowing poetry, like crime doesn’t pay. (Mic drop) There once was a poem so dense It made little - whom I kidding? - no sense But to avoid looking stupid Intellectuals rooted Exalting their delusional pretence
